About the NISCC Network

The National Invasive Species & Climate Change (NISCC) Network is dedicated to addressing the combined threats of climate change and invasive species through collaboration, research, and action.

Our Mission

The NISCC Network is committed to addressing the combined threats of climate change and invasive species. We focus on synthesizing relevant scientific research, sharing the insights and priorities of managers and policymakers, and fostering stronger connections between scientists, policymakers, and environmental managers.

Through collaboration and research, the NISCC Network aims to develop high-priority, actionable solutions to mitigate the impacts of these two critical environmental challenges.

Key Objectives

One of the primary goals of the NISCC Network is to build a national community dedicated to helping professionals address the intersection of climate change and invasive species.

A key focus is on prioritizing engagement with Indigenous communities, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, ensuring their perspectives and knowledge are integrated into the network’s initiatives. The NISCC Network also facilitates knowledge sharing through a variety of platforms, including a centralized website, webinars, research summaries, workshops, and conferences.

In collaboration with managers, researchers, and policymakers, the network identifies and sets priorities for new research that examines the relationship between invasive species and climate change. By creating a space for open communication and collaboration, the NISCC Network supports the exchange of needs and ideas, helping stakeholders work together effectively to combat these growing environmental threats.

Background

The NISCC Network was established after the first National Invasive Species and Climate Change Symposium, hosted by Invasives Canada and the Invasive Species Council of BC (ISCBC) in June 2022. The symposium brought together experts from various fields to discuss the compounded risks of climate change and invasive species, leading to the creation of the NISCC Network to facilitate ongoing collaboration.

National Advisory Group

The National Advisory Group consists of representatives from government, Indigenous communities, industry, academia, and youth leaders. These individuals provide strategic direction, mobilize resources, and act as champions for the network’s objectives.

Working Groups

NISCC Working Groups are responsible for executing the network’s initiatives and addressing its key priorities. They function as action-focused teams that make decisions and complete tasks aligned with the NISCC’s mission.

Cross-RISCC Network

The Regional Invasive Species and Climate Change (RISCC) management networks are designed to address the combined impacts of climate change and invasive species. These regional networks focus on synthesizing cutting-edge scientific research, sharing practitioner knowledge, and fostering stronger collaborations between scientists and on-the-ground managers.

By aligning research with real-world needs, RISCC networks aim to drive practical solutions and informed decision-making at the regional level. The NISCC Network, representing Canada, joined the Cross-RISCC Network in 2021, marking the first national and Canadian-based RISCC network.
